iCloud Photos not syncing? Fixes that usually work
iCloud Photos not syncing? Check Wi-Fi, iCloud storage, and Photos status. Fixes that usually work—plus when deletes sync and what Pikondo does not fix.
By Pikondo team · Updated October 12, 2026

Short answer: iCloud Photos usually pauses for a simple reason—Wi-Fi, power, Low Power Mode, full iCloud storage, or a different Apple Account. Open Photos, check the library status, fix that message, and wait. Do not turn iCloud Photos off to “fix” it; that restarts the whole sync. Pikondo does not fix iCloud sync, change Apple Account settings, or manage iCloud Photos. It helps you review photo clutter on the device after sync is working again.
Short answer: what to try first
- Connect to Wi-Fi, plug in power, and leave the phone unlocked overnight if the library is large.
- Open Photos and read the library status (Uploading, Updating, paused, or full storage).
- Turn off Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode if the status mentions them.
- If iCloud storage is full, free space or upgrade—uploads stop until there is room. See /blog/free-up-icloud-storage.
- Confirm every device uses the same Apple Account, and that Sync this iPhone (or iCloud Photos) is on.
- Do not turn iCloud Photos off. That restarts sync from scratch.
Check that iCloud Photos is on
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud, then tap Photos.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone. On older iOS it is labeled iCloud Photos.
- On some iOS versions you can also check Settings → Photos for the same switch.
- If the switch was off, turn it on, stay on Wi-Fi, and give the first upload time. A big library can take hours or days.
Check storage, Wi-Fi, and power
- Wi-Fi: cellular can pause or slow sync. Prefer a stable Wi-Fi network.
- Power: plug the phone in. Low Battery (under about 20%) pauses sync.
- iCloud storage: open Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage. If the plan is full, uploads stop. Free space or upgrade—see /blog/free-up-icloud-storage.
- Device storage: keep a little free space on the iPhone so downloads and optimize can finish.
- VPN or strict firewall: try without the VPN if sync never moves.
- Date & Time: Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically. Wrong time can break iCloud sign-in.
Optimize iPhone Storage vs Download and Keep Originals
These two options do not turn sync on or off. They only choose how much of each photo lives on the phone.
Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller local copies and leaves full originals in iCloud. That frees phone space after originals finish uploading. See /blog/optimize-iphone-storage.
Download and Keep Originals stores full-resolution files on the iPhone. That uses more local storage and can make a full phone feel “stuck” while sync still runs in the background.
If you need room on the device and the library is already in iCloud, Optimize is usually the better fit. It does not delete photos.
When uploads look stuck
- Open Photos and check the library status. On newer iOS, go to Collections and tap the profile button; the status is under your name. On older iOS, open Library → All Photos and scroll to the bottom.
- If you see Low Power Mode or Low Data Mode, turn those off in Settings, or wait until they are off.
- If you see Optimizing Battery Power, Optimizing System Performance, or Poor Network Connection, tap Sync Now if it appears, or wait a few minutes.
- If you see iCloud storage is full, free space or upgrade before expecting more uploads.
- Force quit Photos (swipe up from the app switcher), reopen it, and check the status again.
- Restart the iPhone, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and leave it plugged in. Large libraries often need an uninterrupted overnight pass.
- If an Unable to Upload album appears, follow Apple’s steps for those items (edit or reimport). Do not turn iCloud Photos off.
Apple Account and device checks
- Same Apple Account on every device that should share the library.
- Update iOS when a fix is available. Old software can stall iCloud features.
- Check other iCloud apps (Mail, Contacts, Messages). If they all fail, test Wi-Fi and Apple’s System Status.
- iCloud Shared Photo Library: items moved to the Shared Library leave your Personal Library view. Open the right library before you assume sync failed.
- Supported formats sync (HEIF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEVC, MP4, Live Photos, and similar). Odd third-party files may sit in Unable to Upload.
When deletes sync across devices
With iCloud Photos on, a delete on your iPhone moves the photo to Recently Deleted everywhere. After about 30 days—or when you empty that album—it leaves iCloud too.
That is sync working, not a bug. If you only want less space on the phone and want to keep the library in iCloud, use Optimize iPhone Storage instead of mass delete. For the safe order, see /blog/delete-photos-from-iphone-not-icloud.
Back up before you clean up
If sync was stuck for a long time, some photos may only be on the phone. Do not delete until you have a copy you can open.
Use iCloud Photos once it finishes uploading, plus a second copy on a computer, drive, or Google Photos when the photos matter. Full walk-through: /blog/back-up-iphone-photos.
How Pikondo fits (and where it stops)
Pikondo does not fix iCloud Photos sync. It does not change Apple Account settings, turn Sync this iPhone on or off, free iCloud plan storage, or clear Uploading / Updating status.
After sync is healthy again, Pikondo helps you review clutter on the device: duplicates and similar shots, screenshots, and blurry photos. Swipe to keep or mark, check the marked list, then confirm. Deletes go through your Photos library and follow the same Recently Deleted and iCloud rules as the Photos app.

The key point
Read the Photos library status, fix Wi-Fi, power, Low Power Mode, or full iCloud storage, and wait. Keep iCloud Photos on. Pikondo does not repair sync—it helps clean photo clutter after your library is uploading again.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are my iCloud Photos not syncing?
- Most often Wi-Fi, power, Low Power Mode, Low Data Mode, or full iCloud storage paused the upload. Open Photos, read the library status, fix that message, and leave the phone on Wi-Fi with power. Do not turn iCloud Photos off.
- Why are iCloud Photos not uploading?
- Uploads stop when iCloud storage is full, the phone is on Low Power Mode or Low Data Mode, battery is very low, or the network is poor. Free iCloud space if needed, connect to Wi-Fi, plug in, and check for Sync Now under the library status.
- How do I check if iCloud Photos is syncing?
- Open Photos. On newer iOS, go to Collections, tap the profile button, and read the status under your name. On older iOS, open Library → All Photos and scroll to the bottom. You may see Uploading, Updating, or a pause reason.
- Should I turn iCloud Photos off and on again?
- No. Apple advises leaving it on. Turning it off restarts the whole sync and can leave photos only on one device if uploads were incomplete.
- Does Optimize iPhone Storage fix sync problems?
- No. Optimize only keeps smaller copies on the phone while originals stay in iCloud. Sync still needs Wi-Fi, power, and free iCloud space. See /blog/optimize-iphone-storage.
- If I delete a photo on my iPhone, does it leave iCloud?
- Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. The photo moves to Recently Deleted on all devices, then leaves iCloud after about 30 days or when you empty that album. See /blog/delete-photos-from-iphone-not-icloud.
- Does Pikondo fix iCloud Photos not syncing?
- No. Pikondo does not change iCloud Photos, Apple Account, or upload status. It helps you review and delete photo clutter on the device after sync is working again.
