How to delete albums on iPhone (without deleting your photos)
Delete an album on iPhone in a few taps. Your photos stay in your library. Plus shared albums, albums you can't delete, and how to really free space.
By Pikondo team · Updated October 28, 2026

Short answer: open Photos, tap Collections, then tap Albums. Touch and hold the album and tap Delete Album. Your photos are safe. Apple says they stay in your library and in any other album they were in. That also means deleting an album frees no space. To free space, you have to delete the photos themselves.
Short answer: delete an album on iPhone
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap Collections, then tap Albums.
- Touch and hold the album you want to delete.
- Tap Delete Album, then confirm.
Does deleting an album delete the photos?
No. An album is a list that points to photos in your library. Delete the album and the list goes away. The photos stay in your library and in any other albums they were in.
If iCloud Photos is on, your albums live in iCloud too. They stay the same on every device signed in to your Apple Account. So the album goes away on your other devices as well. The photos still stay.
Delete more than one album
Apple's steps cover one album at a time. Touch and hold each album, then tap Delete Album. Repeat for the rest. It takes a few seconds per album.
Too many albums but you want to keep them? Put them in folders instead. In Albums, tap the add button, then New Folder. Name it, tap Add Albums, and pick the ones to group. To take an album out, open the folder, touch and hold the album, and tap Remove from Folder.
How to delete a shared album
- Open Photos and tap Collections.
- Tap Shared Albums, then tap the album.
- Tap the More button.
- Tap Delete Shared Album if you made it. Tap Leave Shared Album if someone else made it.
What happens when a shared album is deleted
- It goes away for everyone. Apple says it is removed from your devices and from the devices of everyone you shared it with.
- Photos you saved to your own library stay there, even after the album is gone.
- On iOS 27 or later, you can tap Make Album Temporary instead. The album is then deleted in 30 days.
- Want to keep the shared photos? Save them to your library first.
Why you can't delete some albums
Some collections are made by Photos itself, like Screenshots, Videos, Hidden, and Recently Deleted. Photos fills them by type or status. You did not make them, so there is no Delete Album option. To shrink one, delete the photos inside it.
A shared album someone else made can't be deleted by you either. You can only leave it.
Remove from Album vs Delete
Inside an album you made, the trash icon gives you two choices. Remove from Album only takes the photo out of that album. It stays in your library and still uses space. Delete removes it from your whole library. See /blog/how-to-delete-photos-iphone for the full steps.
Want space back? Delete the photos, not the album
- Open the album, tap Select, then tap Select All. Check the count.
- Tap the trash icon and choose Delete, not Remove from Album.
- A photo in this album may also be in other albums. Delete removes it from all of them.
- If iCloud Photos is on, the delete also happens on your other devices. Back up first: /blog/back-up-iphone-photos.
- Deleted photos sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days and still use space. Empty it to get the space back: /blog/empty-recently-deleted-photos-iphone.
How Pikondo fits (and where it stops)
Pikondo does not delete, edit, or sort albums. It helps you review clutter in your library: duplicates and similar shots, screenshots, and blurry photos. Swipe to keep or mark, check the marked list, then confirm. Deletes go through your Photos library and follow the same Recently Deleted and iCloud rules as the Photos app.

The key point
Touch and hold an album, then tap Delete Album. Your photos stay put. If you want space back, delete the photos themselves and empty Recently Deleted.
Frequently asked questions
- Does deleting an album on iPhone delete the photos?
- No. Apple says the photos and videos stay in your library and in any other albums they were added to. Only the album goes away.
- Does deleting an album free up storage on iPhone?
- No. The photos stay in your library, so they use the same space. To free space, open the album, select the photos, tap the trash icon, and choose Delete. Then empty Recently Deleted.
- How do I delete a shared album on iPhone?
- Open Photos, tap Collections, then Shared Albums. Open the album, tap the More button, and tap Delete Shared Album. This only works if you made it. If someone else made it, tap Leave Shared Album.
- Why can't I delete an album on my iPhone?
- It is probably a collection Photos made for you, like Screenshots, Videos, or Recently Deleted. Those have no Delete Album option. Or it is a shared album someone else made. You can leave that one, but only the owner can delete it.
- How do I delete all the photos in an album?
- Open the album, tap Select, then Select All. Tap the trash icon and choose Delete. This removes them from your whole library, not just the album. Back up first if iCloud Photos is on.
